A NOTE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I heard it said recently that planning a season of theatre during these times is “an act of hope” – and I must agree. In the spirit of hopeful anticipation, we are sharing with you our plans and dreams for our 2022-23 season, and an invitation to join us as a Pacific Theatre subscriber.  Subscribing offers perks and benefits to you as a theatre-goer, and it is a tangible way to show your commitment to PT and join us as we rebuild back from the pandemic. We are offering a four-show package, with the bonus add-on of Christmas Presence. With work ranging from a ghostly Quebecois comedy, to Christmas farce, to powerful family drama and personal storytelling, this year has something for everyone. Through each of these plays runs the thread of coming home: and we look forward to welcoming you home to PT.

THE SHOWS

BENEVOLENCE
A guest production from Ruby Slippers Theatre

by Fanny Britt – Translated by Leanna Brodie
Directed by Diane Brown
SEP 30 – OCT 15

Gilles Jean, big-time lawyer, returns to his hometown of Benevolence to try a troubling case involving the child of an old friend. But with the ghosts of his deceased brothers and father peering over his shoulder, and his mother asking after the state of his soul, homecoming is no easy thing. This pitch-black comedy (presented in a new English translation) offers a surreal reflection on our small cowardices and our great contradictions.

Directed by Diane Brown. Featuring Lucia Frangione, Charlie Gallant, Chris Lam, and Agnes Tong. Sound Design by Rick Colhoun. Set and Lighting Design by John Webber. Costume Design by Jessica Oostergo. Properties by Monica Emme. Stage Management by Nico Dicecco. Assistant Stage Management by Dayna Horn. Technical Direction by Daniel O’Shea.

THE MESSIAH
by Patrick Barlow
NOV 25 – DEC 18

A travelling troupe of two actors and an opera singer arrive by donkey to masterfully, movingly, and miraculously enact the greatest story ever told (with some minor alterations along the way). Three performers play a cast of thousands in an absurd Christmas comedy that melds the sublime, the ridiculous and the truly angelic.

Featuring Peter Carlone, John Voth, and Karen Ydenberg. Directed by Ian Farthing. Set Design and Costume Design by Cecilia Vadala. Lighting Design by Chengyan Boon. Sound Design by Shona Struthers.

CHRISTMAS PRESENCE
DEC 11 – DEC 22

Pacific Theatre’s favourite Christmas tradition. With poems and prose that range from the heartfelt to the hilarious, mixed with music old and new, Christmas Presence is an intimate and warm way to usher in the holiday spirit. The un-slickest Christmas show in town!

Performances hosted by Ron Reed and Ian Farthing on alternate evenings. Lineup varies night to night.

BLACK & RURAL
A guest production from Pi Theatre
by Shayna Jones

MAR 31 – APR 15

Black & Rural is the story of a lone Black country woman struggling to defy the monolith of what matters to Black lives. Derived from dozens of real-life interviews with Black folk tucked away on the countryside across Canada, Shayna Jones weaves together a story of vulnerability, quiet triumph, and striking humanity.

Written and performed by Shayna Jones. Directed by Richard Wolfe.

GOD SAID THIS
by Leah Nanako Winkler
JUNE 2 – JUNE 24

Sisters Hiro and Sophie grew up together in Kentucky, but their lives have taken them down very different paths. When their mother Masako begins chemotherapy, Hiro returns to her family’s messy world as they dig through their past to find a picture they can all fit into. A sharp, funny, and compassionate look at what it means to face the Unknown together.

Featuring Maki Yi, Yoshie Bancroft, Sebastien Archibald, and Stephanie Wong. Directed by Chris Lam and Kaitlin Williams. Lighting Design by Jonathan Kim. Sound Design by Chengyan Boon. Stage Management by Jenny Kim.
