In The Wings: Phil Miguel

Phil Miguel is Pacific Theatre’s longest-standing staff member, having started with us as an apprentice in the 2010-11 season. He knows the theatre inside out and long-time audiences may have seen him in The Verona Project, The Great Divorce, or climbing to the very top rung of ladders to reach that tricky grid bar. I followed him around the office until he answered my riddles.

You’re the production manager, technical director, facilities manager, and general IT wizard at Pacific. Pick three words to describe to an alien what you do.

Fixing, breaking, planning.

What’s an important object in your house?

My bed. Sleep may be my favourite thing.

What’s the goofiest/weirdest thing you’ve done for a show?

I bought some beef jerky for somebody to “cannibalize” a “baby” in a show.

Three people in the city who inspire you.

John Webber, Jethelo Cabilete, and Elia Kirby.

Something you do in your life that’s not related to theatre.

I love kayaking in the warms and snowboarding in the colds.

Something personal that’s made you happy during the pandemic.

It’s been really nice to get a bunch of little home renovations done.

If you could work in any position on any show, what would it be?

Doing the lighting design for any highly technical show a la Betroffenheit (Kidd Pivot) would be an absolute dream.

Favourite behind the scenes moment at Pacific? Favourite show at the theatre?

Back before I was on staff it was so fun to be backstage running all the bits for the safe gags during the Godspell x Laugh In show and punching one of the actors in the face every night. My favourite PT show ever was Ins Choi’s Subway Stations of the Cross.

Hey Phil. Why your face do that?

It’s the fallout of years of accumulation.
