meet the executive director

We are thrilled to welcome our new Executive Director, Jennifer Milley, to the Pacific Theatre family. Jennifer comes from the Education world, but is a theatre kid (and double Literature major) at heart, and we feel lucky to have her steering the PT boat through these strange waters. Our outgoing Executive Director Ian sat down for a quick interview with Jennifer in the captain’s quarters – aka, a Zoom meeting room.

Why did you want to work at Pacific Theatre?
I have always loved theatre, since I was born with a natural stage whisper and no fear of the spotlight. Being up close to the creative process, and being connected to the practical work of making theatre happen were the two most attractive aspects of joining the PT team.

It’s a strange time to be starting this job – what are some of the challenges for you in this time of COVID?
It is a strange time! Getting to know my new co-workers only via Zoom was not something I expected, and I really look forward to sharing a meal and a laugh here in the office when we can be back together. More than the day-to-day, I think everyone is concerned about the future, and what it might look like. I have been so impressed with the care and support offered by the friends of PT, and the board’s commitment to supporting staff and future production.

What sort of work journey have you been on prior to PT?
I was lucky (or foolish) enough to take two English Literature degrees back to back. Finding the post-university world somewhat disinterested in literary criticism, I worked for a short time in a credit union before staying home with two small people for a number of years. During that time, I had opportunity to do some marketing and design, teaching sewing to adults, and help out with catering and events. Such a hodge podge of experiences prepared me for the last nine years of working in development for a local Christian school–being able to serve cookies, design an annual report, arrange donor visits, and dress up as a giant bird mascot were all part of the eclectic life of serving in a small non-profit.

Do you have a favourite play that you’ve seen at PT over the years?
Being at home with small people meant many years of theatre deprivation :); but, as part of my interview process here, I asked for access to scripts, which was a total delight. I think my favourite was The Cake, with its incredible, emotional scene-setting.

When you’re not in the office, what keeps you ticking?
I am always doing a creative project of some kind – knitting, crochet, painting, BAKING, etc.- or reading a book. Also, I love podcasts and running.

You’re allowed to invite 3 actors over for dinner at your house. Who would you choose?
Just for the sheer chaos and joy of sharing a table with them: Emma Thompson, Jennifer Ehle, and Sarah Polley.

Once we’re allowed to travel again… where would be your dream vacation?
I would love some weeks in London, with the resources to take my family to as many shows as we could possibly fit in the time allotted.

Finally, with tongue firmly in cheek: Who is your favourite outgoing Executive Director?!
Ian. Obviously. He has been so so so patient in showing me the ropes, gracious with the gaps in my knowledge, and affirming of my place in the team. May he enjoy a Netflix and nap-filled few weeks of much-deserved rest!
