frankenstein | meet the cast

Director Chris Lam has assembled a dynamite cast of faces (and voices) to bring Mary Shelley’s tale of isolation to spine-curdling life. Here’s what some of our cast and crew had to say about the show.

CORINA AKESON as Victor Frankenstein

It’s a story so full of antithesis. Internal and external conflicts and capitulations invite us to journey with shifting allegiance and beg us to question. And question again. What is right? What is just? What are the inherent responsibilities? … and are the answer even the same? The idea of sharing and experiencing this familiar tale, in such an intimate way with an audience, excites me as an artist.

TARIQ LESLIE as The Monster

MATTHEW SIMMONS as Ensemble

DIANA SQUIRES as Ensemble

I could ponder the human condition for hours into days. So this kind of play is perfect for me. As a Christian, I am gripped by the question–what would my life have been like if from birth I had been unequivocally rejected by my Creator, as opposed to unconditionally accepted? This story’s monster had a Creator who was imperfect–who might s/he have become if his/her Creator was, like mine, perfect? This story compels me, and I hope others, to consider the duty and right relationship of Creator to Creature. It is an opportunity for deep empathy and compassion; in my view, walking a mile in another’s shoes is the best part of theatre. Telling the story through SOUND is, of course, exciting as well, because our radio plays at PT are some of my favourite theatre memories. Incidentally, I was a percussionist when I was younger and making foley hearkens back to the fun of that.
