mother of the maid | meet the crew

Period pieces are rare at Pacific Theatre, so we assembled a crack team of designers to bring Isabelle and Joan’s world to 15th century life. Our director and crew found different aspects of the story to relate to, but everyone seemed to know a Joan or two.

What excites you about the show?

Carolyn Rapanos (Set Designer) : I love that this play focuses a lot on intimate moments and nuanced relationships within an epic story that we often hear in broad strokes. I also love the exploration of female strength in a very masculine world. And it’s exciting to help bring the medieval world to a modern stage!

Nicola Shannon (Assistant Director) : I love the exploration of ever-changing dynamics with family members as a daughter (in this case) tries to pursue her calling. Who can’t relate to being misunderstood by our own family sometimes?

Jessica Oostergo (Co-Costume Designer) : I’m excited to be designing a medieval show as team Stephica! (Jessica and Stephanie, our other co-costume designer, are a long time design team and fierce friends. Together they created the countryside and court looks for a cast of seven!)

Ariel Slack (Co-Props Master) : Even in this day and age I think there’s a lot of relevance in the dynamic between Joan and her mother. I think most mother/child relationships have to experience this kind of pivot that the two of them are going through.
