mother of the maid | meet the cast

We are thrilled to welcome a mix of new faces and Pacific Theatre stalwarts to Mother Of The Maid, our first show of the 2019-2020 season. Here’s what some of our cast and crew had to say about the show and stepping back in time to tell Joan’s story through a whole new lens.

What excites you about the show?

Anita Wittenberg (Isabelle d’Arc) : As a mother myself, I am thrilled to get to be in a story that highlights the emotional journey of motherhood. In preparing for this role, my heart has been reminded of so many present day and historical mothers who have lost children in extreme circumstances. I am also always so happy to be in any story that investigates people of faith and how their faith is tested. As a person of Christian faith myself, I am excited by how this play presents all different kinds of faith: what do we believe in without question?; what do we hold onto when we feel betrayed by what we thought was true?

Shona Struthers (Joan of Arc) : I first fell in love with Joan of Arc when I was fourteen and I got to perform a monologue from Shaw’s The Lark in an acting class. She’s a beautiful study in contrasts: a headstrong teenager with wild ideas, yet also a saint and a martyr. I am so excited to play Joan, this bucket-list dream of mine, alongside Anita’s Isabelle with this fantastic script and team!

AJ Simmons (Lady Of The Court) : Working with an all female creative team on a play written by a female playwright which centres strong, complex, female identified characters.

Ian Butcher (Jacques d’Arc): After having been in Shaw’s St. Joan, I’m excited to a part of a show that explores different aspects of this story.
