meet the apprentice | larisse campbell

Our spring Directing apprentice is the talented Larisse Campbell, who will officially begin her time at Pacific in January 2022. Larisse comes to us with a slate of directing credits and advocacy work for caregivers and parents in the theatre community under her belt, and we look forward to further fostering her this year. Say hi!

Larisse Campbell is a Canadian and American director, theatre educator, and active member of the mental health community based on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish People. She is a 2021 Kennedy Center Director’s Intensive fellowship member and is a 2020 Director’s Lab North cohort. In 2018, she was nominated for Broadway World’s “Best Director for a Small Budget” for Women and War (The Jericho Arts Center). Recent directing and producing credits include: The Hunger Moon: An Evening of Live Streamed New Plays (Presentation House Theatre), Hiding with Company (Brave New Playwrights), Isho and the First Light (Canadian Memorial United Church), Doors and Windows (OR Festival), A Table For Two(Brave New Play Rights) and Bonnie and Clyde (Vancouver Fringe Festival). In 2020, she founded PIPAC – Parents in Performing Arts Canada, as a safe space to explore and establish fair and non-exploitative practices in performing arts for those who identify as caregivers. She is a proud alumni of The University of Alberta Drama Program and Victoria School of the Arts. Larisse is thrilled to be joining Pacific Theatre as an apprentice and is grateful for the opportunity to learn from the wonderful artists and administrators, during this time.

What are you looking forward to most about the apprenticeship?
I am really looking forward to learning from Kaitlin and the entire team at Pacific. I am excited about the mentorship opportunities and the chance to experience the day-to-day work that it takes to run an established theatre company. I am excited to spend time in collaboration with like-minded artists as we learn to navigate the pandemic while making moving and interesting art together. I am just so excited to get my feet wet in all areas of the work happening at Pacific.
Could you share a piece of theatre that moved you?

There are so many but a few that come to mind are: Anywhere but Here (Electric Company Theatre), The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable (Punch Drunk/Royal National Theatre), and Burning Bluebeard (Theatre Network/The Ruffians).

Is there a fictional place you’d like to visit?
I grew up loving The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings so I would love to visit Fangorn Forest and visit the Tree Ents, or perhaps enter the wardrobe for a trip into Narnia.
What’s one of your non-theatrical specialties?
I really love refurbishing old furniture and taking on DIY projects; I am pretty crafty and love power tools or a paint sprayer. I like planning and building decor for parties and events and putting some of that DIY/crafting knowledge to work by helping create interesting and exciting installations for birthdays or events. I am pretty handy with a balloon and can create fun, organic balloon art to liven up a place.
