Benevolence

About

Gilles Jean, big-time lawyer, returns to his hometown of Benevolence to try a troubling case involving the child of an old friend. But with the ghosts of his deceased brothers and father peering over his shoulder, and his mother asking after the state of his soul, homecoming is no easy thing. This pitch-black comedy (presented in a new English translation) offers a surreal reflection on our small cowardices and our great contradictions.

I'm a longtime Pacific Theatre fan and this is the first Ruby Slippers production that I've seen at PT. Wow, what a stunning play. The acting was superb, the story gripping and all-too-real. It all fit together beautifully, the set, the lighting, the very effective pauses for narration. Congratulations to the director, cast and crew, and to the host Pacific Theatre for a wonderful and thought-provoking production.

The kind of play that drew me to Pacific Theatre over two decades ago: smart and provocative script that kept me leaning forward in my seat for most of the play to catch every word; superb acting that had me believing in each character; humour that left me laughing and reflecting at the same time.
