Born in South Korea and raised in Toronto, Choi grew up as the only son of a Korean church pastor, an experience that profoundly shaped his storytelling. He studied theatre at York University and found his artistic voice in Toronto’s Asian Canadian theatre scene, where he first developed Kim’s Convenience. Over the years, he has created and performed a variety of works, including The Subway Stations of the Cross and The KJV: The Bible Show, each weaving together his faith, creativity, and lived experience.
In Son of a Preacherman, Choi takes audiences on an intimate and engaging journey through music, spoken word, and storytelling, reflecting on Bible stories, his creative process, and what it was like growing up in a Korean church. Filled with warmth, wit, and moments of deep reflection, this one-of-a-kind performance is sure to resonate long after the curtain falls.

The good. The not so good.
(But mostly the good.)
Part storytelling event, part stand-up comedy, part concert… it invites the audience to lean in and hear every word and parable uttered.
Outstanding show. Thoughtful, sensitive, humorous. Impactful and creative in sharing his story. These experiences are why we enjoy Pacific Theatre so much.
The play SON OF A PREACHERMAN was excellent, original, authentic and very relatable. The consideration of cultural nuances and subtle details was well thought out. Supporting music and sounds a perfect pairing. Choi’s story is a marvellous gift.
